MANTRAS
Mantra in translation from Sanskrit means: man -- mind; trang -- wave or projection. Mantras help reprogram your mind, delivering a specific message to your subconscious mind. Most Kundalini Yoga mantras are in such sacred languages as Sanskrit and Gurmukhi, the language of Siri Guru Granth Sahib. It is a holy scripture of the Sikhs which includes Divine poetry written by many enlightened and holy men including the Sikh Gurus as well as saints who belonged to other backgrounds, Muslim and Hindu. Some mantras are in English and what really matters is the effect it delivers.
The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy which produces a predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche.
Mantras are formulas that alter the patterns of the mind and the chemistry of the brain, according to physical and metaphysical laws. The power of a mantra is in its sound vibration. Poetically, mantras can be chanted in 3 languages:
aloud -- human;
whisper -- lover's;
silent -- divine.
Our entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. Putting it poetically: God spoke and the world came into being. More precisely, God vibrated and all the universes and worlds, solar systems, oceans, land and sky, and the myriad of beings that inhabit them appeared. There is a vibratory frequency that corresponds to everything in the universe. It is quantum physics. By vibrating a particular combination of sounds, you tune into various levels of intelligence. Situations, people and events respond to the signals you project out. They are attracted to you on the principle like attracts like.
We are creating with every word we speak, even more with every word we think. Whether it is for prosperity, peace of mind, increasing intuition, or any of the other multitude of possible benefits inherent in mantras, simply by chanting them we are setting vibrations into motion that shall have an effect. it doesn't actually matter if we understand the meaning of the sound or not. However being completely present during chanting a mantra magnifies the effect by thousand times and completely changes your experience.
Let's look at the physical aspect of chanting mantras.
We have 84 meridian points located on the hard palate of the roof of the mouth. 32 pairs of points (64 points) are located on the hard palate surface directly behind and along and inside of the teeth, so that there are 4 points on each tooth. The other 20 points are located on the central part of the palate, 10 are along each side. So when you chant a mantra your tongue touches all these various points in your mouth, and it works like dialing different numbers or combinations of codes. This is translated into instructions that regulate chemical messengers that go into all vital areas of the brain and body. When you chant you send a vibration that reaches the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus lies just below the thalamus in the midline of the brain. It is connected by blood vessels to the pituitary gland -- the master gland of the body. The hypothalamus is known to regulate vital functions like hunger, drinking, body temperature and sleep. It also triggers the regulation of moods, emotional behavior and sexuality. The sound current of chanting stimulates hypothalamus to send impulses to the pituitary gland which in turn forces all other glands to secrete and it also releases endorphins (the "feel good" hormones) -- all of it changes the chemistry of the brain. This adjusts the functions of the endocrine system and the metabolism to create a neutral, balanced mind, and to strengthen the immune system. Sound current has many positive effects on the body and it can actually conquer depression, enhance intelligence and intuition, and open the power of compassion.
