Pranayama is the science of breath, controlling the movement of prana through our body using breathing techniques. The word "pranayama" consists of:
Prana - the life force
Pran - first unit
Ayam - expansion
With pranayama we expand the first unit, the seed energy. A slight change in this seed vibration can change the entire Universe. Therefore pranayama is energy management.
In Kundalini Yoga, we use a wide variety of breathing techniques, integrating the rhythm and depth of breath to achieve and manage different energy states of mind, health and emotion.
The mind follows the breath. The key to controlling the mind is to control the breath.
The deeper you breathe, the longer you live. It is through our breath that we can release stress and achieve a relaxed and balanced state of mind.
"If you do not breathe consciously for 11 minutes a day, you lose 40%
of the vitality of life. This 40% you cannot recapture by any medicine
or any exercise. But if you do breathe consciously for 11 minutes
and make it very long, deep and slow, that can do exactly what no
miracle can do, because your life is based on the breath of life."
Yogi Bhajan
"Life is by breath, not years. The average breath is 20-25 times a minute. In good health you breathe 10-12 times a minute. But if you practice one breath a minute for 11 minutes a day, you can be in control of your mind."
Yogi Bhajan 9/10/95
